When there is a possible diagnosis of neuromuscular disorder.
To evaluate the electric response of the nerve or muscle which the nerve is attached to.
To determine if the nerve impulse is conducting normally, at a slow speed or not transmitting at all, suggesting damage to the nerve.
What is the test about ?
Repetitive nerve stimulation tests are a special type of nerve conduction study. A brief series of small electrical shocks is applied to a nerve. This electrical stimulation is delivered to the nerve repeatedly for a few seconds and the responses are recorded from the muscle supplied by that nerve. The study is generally performed before and after a brief exercise of the muscle.
Before The Test
There is no need to fast.
Do not apply any cream, oil, lotion or moisturiser on your body.
Do not apply any cream, oil, lotion or moisturiser on your body.
If you are on anticholinesterase medication, check with your doctor if you can take them on the day of the test.
During The Test
A neurophysiology technologist will place some electrodes (metal disc plates) on your skin.
You may experience some discomfort when the electric current passes through your nerves.
The study is generally performed before and after brief exercise / facilitation of the muscle.
Multiple responses will be recorded.
The procedure will take about 30 minutes
Is the test safe? Are there any side effects?
The test is generally safe and there are no side effects.
